LAS VEGAS, May 15, 2017 -- This evening, The Miss Universe Organization crowned Miss District of Columbia USA Kára McCullough Miss USA at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The special programming event aired live on FOX, and featured women who continue to break pageant stereotypes, including a top 5 whose professions include a scientist, a financial literacy advocate, a professional dancer, a pediatric nurse, and a marketing student who emigrated from India.
Kára is the second consecutive contestant from District of Columbia to win the competition following Deshauna Barber's victory in 2016. As the first active military member to hold the Miss USA title, Deshauna was most recently promoted to Captain in the United States Army Reserve. California Casualty has been supporting educators for more than 65 years, and we understand the correlation between participation in sports and higher performance in the classroom.

Athletes at 79 public schools in 33 states will be gaining a competitive edge thanks to the California Casualty Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grant program. A total of $83,000 was given to help middle and high school sports programs across the country purchase equipment, improve player safety and offset participation fees. Some schools received more than one grant.
The program is named after California Casualty Chairman Emeritus Thomas R. Brown, an avid sportsman himself. Since its inception in 2011, more than 500 schools across the nation have received over $580,000.
