U.S. attorney general unveils 12-city partnership to fight crime

2017-06-21

By Ian Simpson | WASHINGTON The U.S. Justice Department has launched a 12-city partnership to combat spikes in violent crime as part of President Donald Trump’s vow to support law enforcement, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said on Tuesday. The program features a three-year initiative to help coordinate crime-fighting efforts among federal, state, local and tribal law enforcement and prosecutors, Sessions said in unveiling the new National Public Safety Partnership. Trump, a Republican, made tough-on-crime rhetoric a focus of his 2016 campaign. The new program stems from an executive order he signed in February mandating that the Justice Department provide support for local law enforcement. “We have a duty to make sure our country does not abandon all the progress we have made against crime over the past few decades,” Sessions said at a national meeting of law enforcement...

It’s difficult to put this genie back in the bottle,” Danford said of the impending rule and action by the DOL. “Consumers want protection and Wall Street looks bad fighting it. St. Joseph, Missouri June 17, 2017 — It’s been more than two years since the Obama White House offered a report on the cost of conflicted investment advice to investors throughout the country, which spurred a Department of Labor investigation and the possibility of a new fiduciary rule. Despite the current administration’s reluctance to embrace those findings, the Department of Labor (DOL) began implementing the rule in early June 2017. James T. Hodgkinson, 66, wounded House Rep. Steve Scalise before he was fatally shot by police who had been guarding the House majority whip. In the hours after the attack in Alexandria, Virginia, a picture began to emerge of a shooter with a mostly minor arrest record who worked as a home inspector and despised the Republican Party. On Facebook, Hodgkinson was a member of a group called “Terminate...

Drug reduces dyskinesia, ‘off’ times in Parkinson’s patients

2017-06-12

(Reuters Health) – An experimental extended-release version of the drug amantadine can reduce the duration of the involuntary dancing-like movements seen in people whose long-term use of levodopa has kept their Parkinson’s disease under control. The results may help doctors walk a tightrope in treating the tremors and muscle rigidity of Parkinson’s itself, where the beneficial effects of levodopa wane over time, producing so-called “off” times. Efforts to shorten the off times by increasing the levodopa dose lead to the other unwanted movements, a condition known as levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID). LID arises in more than half of Parkinson’s patients who have taken levodopa for four to six years and in more than 90 percent of patients who have been on the drug for a decade. The disease itself affects nearly a million people in the U.S., according to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation. In the new study, when 58 patients were given placebo for...
